Received in the warehouse, booked somewhere else?
Get your Odoo stock back in the right place.
Sound familiar?
“We received it, but Odoo shows it in another location.”
“Odoo suggests buying more while our shelves are full.”
“Production waits for materials that are right there on the shelf.”
“Someone set it up years ago and now nobody dares to touch it.”
Why it goes wrong
Odoo has many ways to set up stock, and the setup grows with your business.
It grew over time
A new location, a copied warehouse, a setting switched on and off. Years later the old rules still run next to the new ones.
Rules compete
Odoo checks the route on the product first and the warehouse after that. So a product can follow a rule nobody remembers adding.
The lines decide
If the destination changes after the order, the lines can keep the old location. And the lines decide where Odoo books your stock.
How it should work
- 1You buy from the supplier. The goods come into the warehouse, and a putaway rule puts them in the right storage area automatically.
- 2The workshop or shop runs below its minimum. Odoo moves stock over from the storage area automatically.
- 3Only fixed exceptions go straight from the supplier to the workshop or shop.
- 4Customers are served from the workshop or shop.
The basics: one warehouse per real business location, with halls, zones and shelves as locations inside it. Min/max per location: the workshop or shop on what it uses in a week, the warehouse on lead time and usage.

Example: Oakline Furniture Works
Oakline Furniture Works makes tables and cabinets to order. It has one warehouse with two locations: Raw materials, where the wood is kept, and Workshop, where the tables are built.
Before
On Monday, 20 dining tables are ordered. Odoo shows the oak boards in stock, yet the production order says “waiting for components”. The boards were received into a location the workshop does not pick from.
The planner walks the floor every morning to check what is really there. Meanwhile Odoo suggests ordering more boards.
After
A putaway rule sends received boards to Raw materials. A restock route moves them to the Workshop. Min/max on the Workshop covers a week of use.
Purchases go to the warehouse only. Production orders find their components.
Oakline Furniture Works is a fictional company, based on a real situation.
